Neurolink

Neuralink Corp., Elon Musk’s brain-implant company, announced it has secured approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to commence human clinical trials.

Time Magazine's; https://time.com/6283002/elon-musks-brain-implant-firm-says-u-s-has-approved-human-tests/ article about the latest regarding Neuralink provides several insights.

In a tweet, the company expressed gratitude for the "incredible work" of the Neuralink team and its collaboration with the FDA, hailing this milestone as a crucial first step toward leveraging technology to benefit numerous individuals.

Both the FDA and Neuralink refrained from immediate comments on the matter.

Musk's venture is dedicated to crafting a compact device facilitating a direct connection between the brain and a computer, employing electrode-laden wires. Implanting the device necessitates surgical drilling into the skull.

The clearance "represents a significant milestone," according to Cristin Welle, a former FDA official and an associate professor of neurosurgery and physiology at the University of Colorado. "They can initiate human trials, which means they have passed the safety preclinical testing and the bench testing," she explained, alluding to evaluations for mechanical and design integrity, as well as durability and compatibility with living tissue.

Established in 2016, Neuralink managed to attract renowned neuroscientists to contribute to its brain-interface project, although some have since transitioned to other ventures or academic pursuits. Musk, concurrently overseeing the operations of Tesla and Twitter, has long hinted at Neuralink's impending FDA approval for human trials.

The primary objective of Neuralink's device is to empower individuals with paralysis or traumatic brain injuries to communicate and operate a computer solely through their thoughts. Beyond aiding the infirm, Musk has speculated that such technology could potentially enable humanity to keep pace with advancements in artificial intelligence.

Neuralink isn’t the first entity in the brain-computer interface arena to embark on human trials. The competitive landscape has expanded considerably since Neuralink's inception.

For instance, Synchron has already enrolled its inaugural US patient in a clinical trial, positioning its implant for potential regulatory clearance for broader usage among individuals with paralysis. Synchron’s device boasts less invasiveness than Neuralink’s and employs a distinct technology.

Despite securing FDA approval for trials, widespread adoption of brain implants remains distant. Commercialization of Neuralink's device is estimated to be at least five to 10 years away, according to Welle. Setting up and recruiting for a trial typically spans several months. It took Synchron nearly a year from FDA approval to implanting the device in July 2022. Initial in-human trials usually involve enrolling five to 10 participants and take approximately six months to complete, Welle noted.

The commencement of the initial human study affords Neuralink the opportunity to refine its device design based on trial outcomes, bypassing the need to restart the entire FDA application process. "It provides flexibility," Welle remarked.

Should the trial yield favorable results, Neuralink can progress to a feasibility study, followed by a pivotal study, akin to a phase III trial for pharmaceuticals..

DeepMind boasts an impressive track record of AI advancements, marking milestones such as mastering the ancient Chinese game Go and cracking the protein-folding problem in biology, offering potential breakthroughs in disease research. However, despite its achievements, Google faced a challenge when OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, introduced the immensely popular chatbot ChatGPT in late 2022. In response, Google merged DeepMind with its AI division, Google Brain, forming Google DeepMind. Led by CEO Demis Hassabis, DeepMind envisions achieving "artificial general intelligence" (AGI), capable of outperforming humans in complex tasks. Reflecting on the journey, Hassabis remarked to TIME in 2022, "In 2010, we were like loners in the desert talking about this with a few other believers. Now it has become mainstream."

Time Magazine's; https://time.com/collection/time100-companies-2023/6285211/google-deepmind/ article about the latest Deepmind updates provides several insights.

In addition to its noteworthy achievements, DeepMind's technological prowess extends beyond its historic successes in Go and protein folding. The company's research spans various domains, from reinforcement learning to natural language processing, laying the groundwork for AGI development. With a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and cutting-edge algorithms, DeepMind is at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities.

Furthermore, the merger with Google Brain signifies a strategic move to consolidate expertise and resources, amplifying DeepMind's impact in the AI landscape. By leveraging Google's vast infrastructure and data resources, DeepMind aims to accelerate research and development, paving the way for groundbreaking AI applications that could revolutionize industries and society at large.

As the pursuit of AGI gains momentum, DeepMind remains committed to ethical AI principles and responsible innovation. With a vision to create transformative technologies that benefit humanity, DeepMind continues to shape the future of artificial intelligence, driving progress towards achieving unparalleled levels of machine intelligence.
